Most moles develop during childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood due to an abnormal collection of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) in the skin. While most moles are dark, some can be light or skin-coloured. Over time, they may become raised or dome-shaped, which is a normal, non-cancerous change.
However, if a mole shows irregular borders, bleeding, or a sudden increase in size, you should consult our dermatologists for evaluation.
How can I get rid of my unsightly mole?
Removal methods vary depending on the type (flat or protruding) and colour (dark or light) of the mole.
For protuberant moles, surgical excision may be necessary. The removed mole is typically sent for histological examination if there is suspicion of skin cancer. After surgery, a fine line scar will replace the mole.
For flat or less raised moles, shave excision or laser therapy may be performed. Laser mole removal helps to lighten pigmentation and results in minimal scarring compared to surgery.
